Price and availability

Choose the device, language, software and compatible micro:bit before planning lessons. Charge the robot at its own charging port, not the micro:bit port. The manual recommends adult supervision for children aged 13 and under, indoor use, and keeping hands and hair away from wheels; turn it off rather than leaving it powered unattended. Its battery guidance says not to remove the battery, while a separate support article describes reseating or swapping one during troubleshooting: seek maker clarification and do not infer that self-repair is permitted. A 2025 maker catalogue lists a five-robot Starter Flock at US$849; this is a historical catalogue offer, not a current single-unit price, stock, UK delivery or landed cost as at 28 October 2026. Confirm support and warranty.

How much do we really
know?

Separate our own tests from published claims and the limits of the evidence. The counts below describe records, not performance or confidence scores.

01 / The assessment

What the evidence supports.

Capability and readiness are separate. These written findings are not a numerical rating or a physical test.

Capability

What can it actually do?

The specific maker claims and any independent observations are listed below. We have not run our own task tests on this robot.

Read the source-based assessment

Readiness

Could you use it in real life?

Intended use: Programmed movement and drawing. Dependable everyday use has not been established by the evidence reviewed. Resolve conflicting battery/replacement guidance. Classroom learning and physical task reliability are different outcomes.

A clear limit

This is a research profile based on the sources below, not a hands-on test. Maker claims remain attributed to the maker; they do not prove repeatable performance in your home or workplace.

Meet BirdBrain Technologies Finch Robot 2.0

Finch Robot 2.0 is distinct from the original Finch. The maker says the new model launched in late 2020. Verify the micro:bit revision and purchased package: sound sensing described in the tutorial requires micro:bit V2. Do not transfer Finch 1 dimensions, sensors or power arrangements.

Right robot, right expectations.

What ownership could involve

Support, software and repairs

BirdBrain offers a free teacher course, student tutorials and classroom activities. Its compatibility list spans mobile, Chromebook, Windows, Mac and Linux, but individual coding tools have different requirements. Check the intended device/tool pairing, included micro:bit, charging arrangements, warranty and replacement battery route for Finch 2.0; original Finch instructions are not interchangeable.

Questions still open

What needs checking before you decide.

  • Finch overlaps existing classroom coding and educational robot candidates; compare age, curriculum and setup value before selection.
  • Battery and replacement guidance conflict; exact hardware and current service instruction need clarification.
  • No task footage viewed, learning outcome established or image reuse cleared.
