BirdBrain positions Finch 2.0 for coding from kindergarten to college and lists line tracking, drawing, light and obstacle sensing; these are functions for programmed activities, not assessed autonomous results.
Source 1BirdBrain Technologies Finch Robot 2.0
A rechargeable classroom robot for movement, sensing and drawing. It suits coding lessons; choose a compatible micro:bit, the small computer board it uses, and suitable software.
Recorded specifications, with their source limits. These are not our measurements. See all specifications and configurations
Choose the device, language, software and compatible micro:bit before planning lessons. Charge the robot at its own charging port, not the micro:bit port. The manual recommends adult supervision for children aged 13 and under, indoor use, and keeping hands and hair away from wheels; turn it off rather than leaving it powered unattended. Its battery guidance says not to remove the battery, while a separate support article describes reseating or swapping one during troubleshooting: seek maker clarification and do not infer that self-repair is permitted. A 2025 maker catalogue lists a five-robot Starter Flock at US$849; this is a historical catalogue offer, not a current single-unit price, stock, UK delivery or landed cost as at 28 October 2026. Confirm support and warranty.
A recorded offer can change. Check its source date below and confirm the exact package, delivery region and total cost with the seller.

Three proposed tasks. Ten attempts at each suitable task, with the outcome, time and human help recorded. Confirm the exact robot, software and safe setup first. These tasks are not evidence that this robot can do them.

We will record the outcome, time, control mode, human help, safety stops, exact hardware and software, conditions and full video.
Proposed attempt; not run Only proceed if the exact unit supports the task and the setup is suitable. Keep remote control, scripted operation and autonomous operation separate. A completed attempt alone does not prove autonomy. What each square will show
Keep the conditions visible
Name the control mode, surface, object or prompt and every intervention. Ten attempts are an initial result, not proof of long-term reliability.

Capability and readiness are separate. These written findings are not a numerical rating or a physical test.
Capability
What can it actually do?
The specific maker claims and any independent observations are listed below. We have not run our own task tests on this robot.
Read the source-based assessmentReadiness
Could you use it in real life?
Intended use: Programmed movement and drawing. Dependable everyday use has not been established by the evidence reviewed. Resolve conflicting battery/replacement guidance. Classroom learning and physical task reliability are different outcomes.
Read the source-based assessmentThis is a research profile based on the sources below, not a hands-on test. Maker claims remain attributed to the maker; they do not prove repeatable performance in your home or workplace.
02 / Can it actually do it?
The claims, with their context.
The wording below keeps each source’s limits. A demonstration, a maker’s claim and a repeatable real-world result are different things.
The learning portal lists FinchBlox, BirdBlox, Snap!, MakeCode/JavaScript, Python and Java with device-specific options. Check the chosen device and software combination.
Source 3The maker reports a US educational loan programme for Finch 2.0. That is an availability claim for participating organisations, not proof of independent task outcomes.

Specifications and configuration
Figures below retain their source and configuration limits. Manufacturer specifications are not independent performance results.
Rechargeable battery; maker advertises 7+ hours, without a stated test duty cycle
Source 1Distance, light and line sensors, wheel encoders, LEDs, buzzer and pen mount are listed by the maker; its separate lesson describes the micro:bit accelerometer and compass.
Source 8Sound sensing requires a micro:bit V2 in the maker tutorial; confirm supplied board
Source 2More than seven hours advertised use.
Manufacturer sourceFinchBlox, BirdBlox, Snap!, MakeCode/JavaScript, Python and Java are listed.
Manufacturer sourceLine tracking, light, obstacle and sound sensing; compass, full-colour LEDs and buzzer.
Manufacturer sourcePen mount and plastic-brick adapter support drawing and construction.

Meet BirdBrain Technologies Finch Robot 2.0
Finch Robot 2.0 is distinct from the original Finch. The maker says the new model launched in late 2020. Verify the micro:bit revision and purchased package: sound sensing described in the tutorial requires micro:bit V2. Do not transfer Finch 1 dimensions, sensors or power arrangements.

Support, software and repairs
BirdBrain offers a free teacher course, student tutorials and classroom activities. Its compatibility list spans mobile, Chromebook, Windows, Mac and Linux, but individual coding tools have different requirements. Check the intended device/tool pairing, included micro:bit, charging arrangements, warranty and replacement battery route for Finch 2.0; original Finch instructions are not interchangeable.
Questions still open
What needs checking before you decide.
- Finch overlaps existing classroom coding and educational robot candidates; compare age, curriculum and setup value before selection.
- Battery and replacement guidance conflict; exact hardware and current service instruction need clarification.
- No task footage viewed, learning outcome established or image reuse cleared.
