M5Stack StackChan

A small programmable desktop companion for makers exploring movement and interaction. It suits custom projects; useful behaviour depends on the controller, software and work you put in.

How much do we really
know?

Separate our own tests from published claims and the limits of the evidence. The counts below describe records, not performance or confidence scores.

01 / The assessment

What the evidence supports.

Capability and readiness are separate. These written findings are not a numerical rating or a physical test.

Capability

What can it actually do?

The specific maker claims and any independent observations are listed below. We have not run our own task tests on this robot.

Read the source-based assessment

Readiness

Could you use it in real life?

Intended use: Programmed desktop interaction. Dependable everyday use has not been established by the evidence reviewed. Distinguish factory software from community firmware. Extra controllers and expansion boards must not be assumed included.

A clear limit

This is a research profile based on the sources below, not a hands-on test. Maker claims remain attributed to the maker; they do not prove repeatable performance in your home or workplace.

Know the exact robot

The name alone may not tell you which hardware, software or support you get. Keep editions and optional equipment separate.

Meet M5Stack StackChan

M5Stack’s StackChan is associated with SKUs K151 and K151-R. The open-source Stack-chan community project and alternative self-built configurations are related but not assumed identical; a remote-controller package is not a separate robot.

04 / Living with it

Right robot, right expectations.

What ownership could involve

Choose the exact hardware and whether the remote-controller bundle is included. M5Stack describes factory AI-agent, app video and remote-avatar functions; exact account and network requirements need confirmation. Other firmware can change behaviour. Check app support, firmware provenance, privacy, battery, UK supply and repair. It is described as a desktop robot; locomotion is not established. Camera and microphone functions merit household consent and data-handling review. M5Stack also documents Arduino and UiFlow2 development options; verify account, connectivity, privacy and firmware support for the exact software used.

Support, software and repairs

Official documentation includes Arduino/UiFlow, firmware restoration, calibration and hardware tests. The original core controller is required for the StackChan app; ordinary CoreS3 variants are not app-compatible replacements. The August 2026 LCD revision requires M5GFX 0.2.27 or newer. Unbind before switching XiaoZhi services. Confirm warranty and replacement-controller availability; avoid forcing powered servos.

Questions still open

What needs checking before you decide.

  • No independent test of recognition, servo accuracy, software or cloud availability.
  • Do not assume community firmware and factory features are interchangeable.
  • Remote, expansion boards and other builds are not extra robots.
