Sphero describes onboard colour, light and infrared sensors, accelerometer and gyroscope, plus an expansion interface.
Source 3Sphero RVR+
A programmable tracked rover for classroom and maker projects. It suits driving and sensor experiments; more ambitious additions need extra hardware and development work.

The maker lists a single pack and class packs; the retained $6,102 figure is for the selected 18-pack, not a single robot. UK delivery, tax, current stock and warranty are unverified.

test track
Three proposed tasks. Ten attempts at each suitable task, with the outcome, time and human help recorded. Confirm the exact robot, software and safe setup first. These tasks are not evidence that this robot can do them.

We will record the outcome, time, control mode, human help, safety stops, exact hardware and software, conditions and full video.
Proposed attempt; not run Only proceed if the exact unit supports the task and the setup is suitable. Keep remote control, scripted operation and autonomous operation separate. A completed attempt alone does not prove autonomy. What each square will show
Keep the conditions visible
Name the control mode, surface, object or prompt and every intervention. Ten attempts are an initial result, not proof of long-term reliability.

What the evidence supports.
Capability and readiness are separate. These written findings are not a numerical rating or a physical test.
Capability
What can it actually do?
The specific maker claims and any independent observations are listed below. We have not run our own task tests on this robot.
Read the source-based assessmentReadiness
Could you use it in real life?
Intended use: Tracked programming and electronics projects. Dependable everyday use has not been established by the evidence reviewed. Extra hardware changes the application. A class-pack price must not be presented as a single-unit price.
Read the source-based assessmentThis is a research profile based on the sources below, not a hands-on test. Maker claims remain attributed to the maker; they do not prove repeatable performance in your home or workplace.
02 / Can it actually do it?
The claims, with their context.
The wording below keeps each source’s limits. A demonstration, a maker’s claim and a repeatable real-world result are different things.
The maker describes driving with Sphero Edu and expanding the platform using supported development boards; custom integrations are not supplied finished functions.
Source 4Sphero says the USB and UART ports share a 5 V supply limited to 2.1 A combined, while UART RX/TX use 3.3 V logic. This is a maker-specified constraint for expansion projects, not proof that an accessory or board is supplied.

Specifications and configuration
Figures below retain their source and configuration limits. Manufacturer specifications are not independent performance results.
185 × 216 × 113 mm as listed in the maker FAQ; configuration includes roll cage.
Source 4RVR+ maker claim: 1,000 g; conditions and independent test not established.
Source 4185 × 216 × 113 mm (L × W × H); 70 mm high without roll cage.
Manufacturer source1,000 g; the older RVR figure is 250 g.
Manufacturer sourceRVR+ approximately 1 m/s; do not use the older RVR’s 2 m/s figure.
Manufacturer sourceMaker FAQ: 30–60 minutes continuous use; 1.5–3 hours charging.
Manufacturer sourceFour-pin UART uses 3.3 V logic and is not 5 V tolerant; USB host support is limited to compatible USB CDC devices.
Manufacturer sourceSphero Edu plus SDK routes for Raspberry Pi, micro:bit and Arduino. Board/software compatibility must be checked.

04 / Living with it
Right robot, right expectations.
What ownership could involve
Charge the removable battery and check the current Sphero Edu device requirements. A micro:bit project needs a compatible board, a data cable and an internet-connected programming device; other extensions require their own hardware and skills. The maker says the robot is not waterproof. Keep a clear route, supervise learners and clean the treads after outdoor use. Battery runtime is uncertain: the product page claims two hours playtime, whereas the SDK FAQ states 30–60 minutes continuous use depending on usage; conditions are not directly comparable. Check battery availability, warranty, account and data terms and local support before purchase.
Support, software and repairs
Sphero supplies SDK examples and connection guidance. Avoid issuing conflicting drive commands from the app and an external board. It is not waterproof. The shared RVR/RVR+ FAQ mixes generation-specific values, so verify the RVR+ electrical limits against its own power guide before adding equipment.
