How much do we really
know?

Separate our own tests from published claims and the limits of the evidence. The counts below describe records, not performance or confidence scores.

01 / The assessment

What the evidence supports.

Capability and readiness are separate. These written findings are not a numerical rating or a physical test.

Capability

What can it actually do?

The specific maker claims and any independent observations are listed below. We have not run our own task tests on this robot.

Read the source-based assessment

Readiness

Could you use it in real life?

Intended use: Programmed rolling and sensor feedback. Dependable everyday use has not been established by the evidence reviewed. Compatible devices, classroom setup and usable lesson time matter more than the number of advertised sensors.

A clear limit

This is a research profile based on the sources below, not a hands-on test. Maker claims remain attributed to the maker; they do not prove repeatable performance in your home or workplace.

The name alone may not tell you which hardware, software or support you get. Keep editions and optional equipment separate.

The figures and features below come from the named sources. They are not independent measurements. Optional hardware and conflicting revisions are kept separate.

Documented technical details and configuration limits
Item Documented detail Evidence
Display Sphero describes BOLT+ as having a 128 × 128 LCD, replacing the original BOLT matrix, and retaining compatibility with original BOLT lessons. Source 1
Programmable inputs The maker lists programmable distance and ambient-light events and a drive block for manual driving while a programme runs. Source 1
Connection Sphero says BOLT+ connects by Bluetooth and displays an individual robot ID to help select the correct unit. Source 2

An omitted measurement is unknown in this review, not zero or unsupported. Check the exact hardware edition and documentation before ordering or designing around it.

Meet Sphero BOLT+

BOLT+ is distinct from original BOLT. Sphero identifies the newer model by its LCD rather than the original LED matrix; confirm the physical model and app selection.

04 / Living with it

Right robot, right expectations.

What ownership could involve

For a class, label and charge robots and match the displayed ID to the connected device. Check current app and operating-system compatibility before buying. Test the intended floor and establish a safe clear area; support, battery service and regional warranty remain open. A rolling route is an opportunity to examine the gap between a programmed instruction and a physical result. Measure the finish position across repeated runs and record the surface, starting orientation and collisions. Keep manual driving separate from programmed movement, especially when both occur in one session. For longer-term ownership, test whether a new learner can reconnect after sleep and identify the right robot without repeatedly needing an adult. Published lesson compatibility does not establish that all classroom devices will work.

Support, software and repairs

BOLT+ retains compatibility with original BOLT lessons using a matrix emulator, while adding display and event blocks. Confirm app/device versions, classroom pack contents, sealed-battery service and warranty. The maker’s school-day estimate depends on use; compatibility with lessons does not make the old and new hardware identical.

Questions still open

What needs checking before you decide.

  • Manufacturer performance and compatibility claims are not independent testing.
  • Battery endurance, repairability and task accuracy are unverified.
