Makeblock says Codey Rocky works with mBlock 5 using block-based programming and Python.

A beginner coding robot with a moving base and sensors. It suits guided lessons and play; a compatible device and useful activities matter more than robot tricks.

Three proposed tasks. Ten attempts at each suitable task, with the outcome, time and human help recorded. Confirm the exact robot, software and safe setup first. These tasks are not evidence that this robot can do them.
Complete one documented learning activity
Proposed task. 0 of 10 attempts run.
Repeat the activity from the same starting setup
Proposed task. 0 of 10 attempts run.
Change one permitted setting and repeat the activity
Proposed task. 0 of 10 attempts run.
Pick a square to see what each attempt will record.
We will record the outcome, time, control mode, human help, safety stops, exact hardware and software, conditions and full video.
Proposed attempt; not run Only proceed if the exact unit supports the task and the setup is suitable. Keep remote control, scripted operation and autonomous operation separate. A completed attempt alone does not prove autonomy. What each square will show
Keep the conditions visible
Name the control mode, surface, object or prompt and every intervention. Ten attempts are an initial result, not proof of long-term reliability.

Capability and readiness are separate. These written findings are not a numerical rating or a physical test.

What can it actually do?
The specific maker claims and any independent observations are listed below. We have not run our own task tests on this robot.

Could you use it in real life?
Intended use: Introductory coding and sensor response. Dependable everyday use has not been established by the evidence reviewed. Assess whether a learner can run and change activities. Recognition features are not evidence of learning outcomes.
Read the source-based assessmentThis is a research profile based on the sources below, not a hands-on test. Maker claims remain attributed to the maker; they do not prove repeatable performance in your home or workplace.
02 / Can it actually do it?
The claims, with their context.
The wording below keeps each source’s limits. A demonstration, a maker’s claim and a repeatable real-world result are different things.
The 2023 beginner guide lists Codey, Rocky, a lanyard, eight colour cards, a name sticker and a micro USB cable. Confirm contents against the specific offer.
Source 1The maker describes sound and light sensing on Codey and colour and proximity sensing on Rocky.
Source 1Makeblock says Codey can run programmed sound and display commands on its own, whereas the Rocky chassis needs Codey. Its historical FAQ says the robot lacks a voice-recognition module; voice control requires a separate Neuron speech-recognition module. Confirm current compatibility and accessories.

04 / Living with it
Right robot, right expectations.
What ownership could involve
Check a suitable device and mBlock access before purchase, then allow time for charging and adult setup. Keep colour cards together and assess whether children can move from a guided activity to changing a programme themselves. Regional warranty, battery service and replacement parts remain unverified. For a useful first lesson, ask the learner to predict a movement, run it and explain a mismatch before changing the code. Record the assistance required rather than attributing the adult’s debugging to the robot. Sound-level sensing should not be described as understanding spoken instructions. Compare the handheld Codey activity with the same programme on the Rocky chassis: the moving assembly adds physical testing and floor-space requirements. Current purchasing and service eligibility must be checked for the intended country.
Support, software and repairs
Confirm compatibility with the current Makeblock software and your computer or tablet. Battery duration depends on movement and accessories. Use the maker’s safety instructions and authorised charging equipment; a classroom programming product still needs adult supervision. Regional warranty, spare parts and repair arrangements should be agreed with the seller.
Questions still open
What needs checking before you decide.
- Maker claims are not independent evidence of reliable line following or obstacle avoidance.
- No assessed learning outcomes, battery endurance or repair route.
