Robot vacuum, mower or pool cleaner: choose around the job
Use this guide to prepare your questions, then compare the answers with evidence from the actual model and working environment. You can open highlighted robotics terms for a quick explanation.
Imagined robotics concept artwork. It does not show a real installation or an approved manufacturer product.

Choose the robot that suits the work and the space you actually have. A floor cleaner, lawn mower and pool cleaner are different appliances. Their value depends on how well the exact model matches its environment and how much ownership work remains.
If you are deciding where to start with household robotics, compare the chore you want to reduce rather than the most impressive feature list. This guide gives you a practical brief to take to a supplier.
For a robot vacuum, describe the rooms
List the floors to be cleaned, the floor coverings, room layout and changes of level. Measure relevant clearances and consider where the robot and dock would live. Include pets, loose cables and objects that regularly end up on the floor.
Then decide what work you expect: vacuuming, mopping or both. Ask what preparation the exact model needs, which surfaces it is intended to clean and how its settings apply to your rooms. Roborock provides a model comparison page as one manufacturer example; follow it with the exact model's instructions.
Ask about the dock's routine as well as the robot's. Find out what needs emptying, filling, washing or replacing, and where any required consumables come from. A feature described as automatic can still create an ownership task elsewhere.
For a mower, describe the whole garden
Record the lawn area, layout, slopes, narrow passages and separated sections. Include the proposed charging location and any boundaries that need special attention. Ask a supplier to assess the actual garden rather than choosing from area alone.
Husqvarna's UK range includes models using a physical boundary wire and wire-free approaches. The right installation depends on the chosen system and the site. Husqvarna UK robotic lawn mowers
Ask what must be installed, which signals or connections the system requires and how changes to the garden are handled. Establish which edge work or other mowing remains outside its intended routine. Check operating and storage instructions for the exact model before assuming it can run in every condition.
For a pool cleaner, describe the pool
Measure the pool and record its shape, construction, surface and any steps or unusual features. Describe the debris you are trying to remove and the areas you want cleaned: floor, walls or waterline, where a model supports them.
Maytronics' selection tools ask buyers to identify the pool's characteristics when choosing a cleaner. That is more useful than comparing robots without describing the pool first. Maytronics model selector
Ask how the cleaner is placed into and retrieved from the pool, what needs cleaning after use and where it should be stored. Follow the maker's instructions on operation and people using the pool. A cleaner's presence does not establish that every part of pool care is covered.
Compare the work left for you

Include the inconvenient parts, such as emptying, carrying or dealing with a stopped cycle. These are often what determine whether the product fits your daily life.
Check ownership costs and support
Compare delivered quotations on the same basis. Include necessary installation, accessories and recurring services where applicable. Ask who supports the product in your location and how a fault would be handled.
Find out how replacement consumables and parts are identified. A common brand name does not prove an item fits every model. Keep the full model and relevant revision with any parts enquiry.
For connected features, check app requirements, account arrangements and what works without an internet connection. If a particular function is essential, get a clear answer before buying.
Choose one useful first purchase
Rank your chores by the time or effort they take and by how well a suitable robot has been shown to handle your environment. Include the upkeep you will still do and the complete cost.
The right first robot may be the one with the clearest, most repeatable job. Make the purchase around a routine you can understand and maintain, then judge its value from actual use before expanding into another category.
